Description

Mental Health First Aid

NOTE: This training is open only to Anoka County Food Shelf staff and volunteers

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that teaches participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps participants identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.

WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN? Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives. Mental Health First Aiders learn a single 5-step strategy that includes assessing risk, supporting the individual in crisis, and identifying appropriate professional help and other supports.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THE COURSE? Mental Health First Aid is intended for all people and organizations that make up the fabric of a community. Those who regularly interact with a lot of people (such as police officers, human resource directors, and primary care workers), school and college leadership, faith communities, or anyone interested in learning more about mental illness and addiction should get trained.

NOTE: Mental Health First Aid is not designed for mental health providers. Just like a paramedic would not take CPR, a psychologist would not take Mental Health First Aid.

Each participant will receive a Mental Health First Aid manual to keep. Certificates will be provided and attendees may use these to apply for CEUs. Information regarding curriculum can be found at www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org.

Participants MUST attend the full 8 hours of the curriculum course to receive a certificate.

Lunch: Lunch is not provided as part of the workshop. Participants are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch.
